Today the kids and I are cooking with flowers. N & M love to cook so it was easy to incorporate flowers and cooking together. There are a lot of flowers that are edible, here is a list. We have eaten chive flowers, and broccoli (yes a flower). I did try one of my tulip leaves, very sweet but afterwards I felt a little tickle in my throat and learned tulips are highly allergic, you were warned.
Today, with our pj’s still on, we made some jam. Some strawberry lavender jam. It is so easy, and the kids loved to smash the strawberries. I had to wing it a bit but I think it turned out great. It smells beautiful and taste pretty yummy!
3 lbs. strawberries, hulled and sliced
1/4 cup lemon juice
4 cups of sugar combine
let all this sit for 30 min-then mash strawberries
add 1 tablespoon of dried lavender flowers
1 pkg of pectin
cook on med high till it reaches 220 degrees f. Stir often. let cool and place into jars! refrigerate to set.
